This is really stellar stuff if you're into contemplative contemporary vibraphone. Haunting and circular in nature, the tunes and general vibe are very mellow. Some might consider this modern "mood music" but that would be selling it short as there is MUCH depth to this album and I get more out of it with each listen. Somewhat somber in character, but with a strong dose of wonder, it's hard to classify the style-- somewhere between chamber jazz and classical, with a touch of what reminds me of music from the Mr. Rogers TV shows of my youth (I mean that as compliment!). Would be at home on the ECM label, for sure.Part of a series of three "mostly solo" albums, some tunes feature variations on chamber ensembles with cello, violin, clarinet, etc, but the vibraphone is always the epicenter. The compositions and playing are masterful and highly individual, and the recording style is up-close and intimate. Having owned and played a vibraphone previously, this is what it sounds like to play one well and in a nice room.The LP quality is quite good (though I did have to exchange one due to warpage), and the label obviously cares about quality. The images and poetic notes by the composer are quite lovely and compliment the music well. My copy also had a download card for WAV files in 24 bit resolution, as well as a separate card for a free sampler compilation. Very nice touches that I really appreciate.It's easy to find sample videos on YouTube, etc... If you like the samples, you won't be disappointed in the album. I find myself listening just before bed, or when I need a relaxing break from the trials of life. I now have all three albums, and am super happy with all of them!
